Inland Waterway Safety Assessment

Background

Service Overview

Inland waterways account for more than a quarter of all drowning deaths. The flat, still surface of an inland waterway can give a false sense of security to patrons who visit these locations.

With inland waterways experiencing dramatically increased visitation rates, it is critical that a range of strategies are implemented to reduce the risk of drowning in these locations.

The Royal Life Saving Inland Waterway Safety Assessment (IWSA) evaluates existing operational policies and procedures, emergency management plans, aquatic signage compliance, hazard identification and access and egress points. In review, it can provide landowners with a comprehensive improvement plan with which to implement.

By commissioning Royal Life Saving to undertake an IWSA, land managers take a proactive approach in determining appropriate risk mitigation actions to help prevent foreseeable loss of life and injury to local residents and visitors recreating in the aquatic environment.
