Swim Teacher – Infants and Toddlers
Gain nationally recognised skills to teach infants, toddlers, and their caregivers with this blended course combining online modules, workplace assessments, and licensing. Accreditation is valid for three years and prepares you to deliver safe, engaging early childhood aquatic programs.

The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher – Infants and Toddlers course is a nationally recognised program designed for swim teachers seeking specialist skills in teaching infants over six months of age, toddlers, and their caregivers. Accreditation is valid for three years.
The course develops the knowledge and practical skills to design aquatic activities that promote early development, water safety awareness, and positive parent–child interaction. It also focuses on communication techniques and age-appropriate strategies for engaging infants, toddlers, and caregivers in the aquatic environment.
Please note: Royal Life Saving NSW is not a CRICOS provider and cannot deliver nationally recognised training to overseas students holding a student visa.

This course is designed for qualified Swim Teachers who want to extend their expertise to working with infants, toddlers, and their caregivers. It is ideal for teachers seeking to deliver early childhood aquatic programs or broaden their career pathways within the learn-to-swim industry.
The course takes approximately 20 hours to complete, comprising:
8 hours of online learning and assessment
12 hours of on-the-job teaching and assessment (signed off by an Approved RLS Workplace Supervisor)
Before commencing this course, candidates must hold the following units from the SISSS00132 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Skill Set:
SISCAQU024 – Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
SISCAQU025 – Teach water safety and survival skills
Expedited pathways are available depending on existing qualifications. Evidence of these units must be uploaded during enrolment.
Assessment is completed across three steps:
Online Modules – Candidates complete a self-paced online learning component.
On-the-Job Assessment – Candidates apply their skills in real teaching sessions with infants, toddlers, and caregivers, observed and signed off by an Approved RLS Workplace Supervisor.
Licence Application – Completed with the Workplace Supervisor and submitted to Royal Life Saving for final approval.
Candidates are covered under Royal Life Saving insurance until their final Statement of Attainment is issued.
On successful completion of this course you will be issued a Statement of Attainment in:
SISCAQU027 – Promote development of infants and toddlers in an aquatic environment
Candidates who complete the online learning, on-the-job assessment, and licence application will also receive a Swim Teacher – Infants and Toddlers Licence.
The Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice: First Aid in the Workplace and the Australian Resuscitation Council recommend that first aid skills are renewed every three years, and resuscitation skills (HLTAID009/HLTAID015) are renewed every 12 months.
The Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO) also recommend that the Swim Teacher Skill Set and specialist accreditations such as Infants and Toddlers are renewed every three years. Please also refer to specific industry standards and guidelines.
