Diabetes (Hypo/Hyperglycaemia)

Introduction
Diabetes is a condition where the body struggles to regulate blood sugar levels effectively. Hypoglycaemia refers to blood sugar dropping too low, while hyperglycaemia occurs when it becomes too high. Both can create serious concerns if not addressed quickly. Understanding diabetes and its effects helps to promote safer environments for people living with the condition.
Signs and Symptoms
Sensitivity to light/noise
Drowsiness, loss of consciousness (in severe cases)
Hypo: sweating, tremors, hunger, irritability, confusion, collapse
Hyper: thirst, frequent urination, drowsiness, fruity breath, coma (severe)
What you should do?
Follow DRSABCD
Call 000 if severe or unresponsive
If conscious and hypo suspected: give sugary food/drink
If no improvement, follow with longer-acting carbohydrate
If unresponsive, do not give food/drink; place in recovery position and monitor
Monitor breathing, commence CPR if required
