Introduction

Diabetes is a condition where the body struggles to regulate blood sugar levels effectively. Hypoglycaemia refers to blood sugar dropping too low, while hyperglycaemia occurs when it becomes too high. Both can create serious concerns if not addressed quickly. Understanding diabetes and its effects helps to promote safer environments for people living with the condition.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Sensitivity to light/noise

  • Drowsiness, loss of consciousness (in severe cases)

  • Hypo: sweating, tremors, hunger, irritability, confusion, collapse

  • Hyper: thirst, frequent urination, drowsiness, fruity breath, coma (severe)

What you should do?

  • Follow DRSABCD

  • Call 000 if severe or unresponsive

  • If conscious and hypo suspected: give sugary food/drink

  • If no improvement, follow with longer-acting carbohydrate

  • If unresponsive, do not give food/drink; place in recovery position and monitor

  • Monitor breathing, commence CPR if required
