ROYAL LIFE SAVING

This course provides current lifeguards with the opportunity to renew their annual qualification through a blended delivery format. It ensures participants remain up to date with industry standards, safety practices, and emergency response procedures. Candidates complete self-paced online theory modules before attending a one-day practical workshop, where they are assessed across the full range of pool lifeguard competencies.
Please note: Royal Life Saving NSW is not a CRICOS provider and cannot deliver nationally recognised training to overseas students holding a student visa.
Key content includes:
Patron surveillance and supervision techniques
Emergency response and water rescue skills
Oxygen resuscitation and therapy in aquatic environments
Single and complex water rescues
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

This course is designed for existing pool lifeguards who need to maintain their annual licence and demonstrate ongoing competence in supervision, rescue, and emergency response. It is also suitable for aquatic facility staff who wish to remain current with industry standards and compliance requirements.
The course takes approximately 12 hours in total, comprising around five hours of online theory and seven hours of face-to-face practical assessment and supervised instruction.
To enrol, candidates must hold:
A current Pool Lifeguard qualification (SISSS00133 Pool Lifeguard Skill Set or equivalent units of competency).
A current HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid qualification.
Note: HLTAID003 Provide First Aid is not accepted as a prerequisite.
Participants must also be able to:
Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin placed on the floor.
Meet the aquatic fitness requirements for water rescues and practical assessments.
Demonstrate ACSF Level 3 in reading and oral communication, and Level 2/3 in writing and numeracy.
Minimum age: 16 years, or turning 16 in the year of the course.
- Assessment is completed in two stages. First, candidates must complete the required online theory modules, which include HLTAID009 Provide CPR and Pool Lifeguard refresher knowledge components. Only participants who complete the online modules in full are eligible to attend the practical assessment. Second, candidates attend a one-day workshop where they are assessed in person across all lifeguard skill sets, including surveillance, rescues, oxygen therapy, and CPR. Competence must be demonstrated in both theory and practice to receive certification.
On successful completion of this course you will be issued a statement of attainment in:
SISCAQU019 – Supervise patron safety in aquatic locations
SISCAQU020 – Perform water rescues
SISCAQU021 – Perform complex water rescues
SISCAQU022 – Provide oxygen resuscitation and therapy in an aquatic environment
HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Participants will also receive an updated Pool Lifeguard Licence (if previously held).
The Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice: First Aid in the Workplace and the Australian Resuscitation Council recommend that first aid skills are renewed every three years, and resuscitation skills (HLTAID009/HLTAID015) are renewed every 12 months. Please also refer to specific industry standards and guidelines.
