ROYAL LIFE SAVING

Effective lifeguard supervision is one of the most critical factors in ensuring patron safety at aquatic facilities. This online module takes learners through the key elements of creating a contextualised and practical supervision plan, considering factors such as facility design, environmental conditions, types of swimmers, available resources, and the range of activities taking place.
The module is highly interactive, combining visual learning with practical activities, and is based on the Aquatic Supervision Planning Guidelines within the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO). Learners are guided through hazard identification, rescue equipment placement, lifeguard deployment, rotations, zones, and roving patterns in response to changing conditions.
Key learning outcomes include:
Reflecting on current knowledge, skills, and experience in supervision planning.
Understanding and applying the GSPO aquatic supervision planning guidelines.
Developing an appreciation of risk management in the context of aquatic supervision.
Learning the step-by-step process of designing supervision systems and plans.
Gaining insights into the challenges and requirements of lifeguard supervisory and management roles.

This course is designed for facility managers and duty managers responsible for developing and overseeing supervision systems. Experienced lifeguards and those moving into leadership or supervisory roles will also benefit significantly from completing the module.
The recommended learning time for this module is approximately 50 minutes.
There are no formal entry requirements. However, the course is best suited to learners with prior aquatic industry experience, such as lifeguards, supervisors, or facility management staff.
- Assessment is integrated within the online learning, with interactive activities that require participants to demonstrate understanding of supervision planning principles, lifeguard deployment, and facility risk management.
Upon successful completion of the online module, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Completion of the module contributes to meeting the annual in-service training requirements for lifeguards as outlined in the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO) – Aquatic Supervision.
