Swim Teaching for participants on the Autism Spectrum

Learn inclusive teaching strategies to support swimmers on the autism spectrum.

  • Overview

    This online training course provides information and learning experiences to support you as a swim teacher and support students on the Austism Spectrum.


    The course will introduce you to the tasks, skills and techniques for teaching students on the spectrum.


    Course modules include:


    • Understanding what autism is, and what it isn’t

    • Identifying the strengths, interests, characteristics and behaviours of people on the spectrum and better understanding how they may think and learn

    • Understanding the relationship between autism, water, swimming and drowning prevention

    • Preparing lessons or programs tailored to individual participants on the spectrum

    • Preparing for and managing behaviours you may experience when teaching swimming to participants on the spectrum

    • Utilising a range of strategies and techniques during lesson delivery

    Course Pre-Requisites

    There are no formal entry requirements but to benefit from the learning we advise that Learners have a minimum of Swim Teacher or equivalent. These modules add to the suite of Professional Development products for the aquatic industry workforce designed by Royal Life Saving. Other recently developed online learning modules include Conflict Management, Cultural Competence, Communication Skills, Child Safety for Frontline Staff, and Child Safety for Management Staff.


    Delivery Mode

    The course is an online training course.


    Certification

    Upon successful completion of the online course participants will receive a completion certificate.


    Age Requirement

    Participants wishing to complete this training are to be 16 years of age or turning 16 in the calendar within which the course is to be held to participate in this course.

  • This course is designed for swim teachers who want to gain specialist skills in supporting students on the autism spectrum. It is ideal for teachers delivering inclusive aquatic programs and for those working within schools or community swim settings.

  • This course is delivered as a self-paced online module, allowing participants to complete the training at their own convenience.

  • There are no formal entry requirements. The course is designed for qualified Swim Teachers seeking to build specialist skills in supporting students with autism.

  • Learners complete interactive knowledge checks and reflection activities embedded within the module to demonstrate understanding.

  • Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.

    The Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO) recommend that swim teacher specialist accreditations, such as this course, are renewed every three years. Please also refer to specific industry standards and guidelines.
