
This online training course provides swim teachers with the knowledge, skills, and practical strategies to effectively support students on the autism spectrum. The course explores how autism may influence learning, behaviour, and interaction with water, and equips teachers with techniques to create safe, engaging, and inclusive aquatic programs.
Key content includes:
Understanding what autism is (and what it isn’t)
Recognising strengths, interests, and learning characteristics of people on the spectrum
Exploring the relationship between autism, water, swimming, and drowning prevention
Preparing tailored lessons and programs for participants on the spectrum
Anticipating and managing behaviours in an aquatic setting
Using strategies and techniques to support lesson delivery

This course is designed for swim teachers who want to gain specialist skills in supporting students on the autism spectrum. It is ideal for teachers delivering inclusive aquatic programs and for those working within schools or community swim settings.
This course is delivered as a self-paced online module, allowing participants to complete the training at their own convenience.
There are no formal entry requirements. The course is designed for qualified Swim Teachers seeking to build specialist skills in supporting students with autism.
Learners complete interactive knowledge checks and reflection activities embedded within the module to demonstrate understanding.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.
The Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO) recommend that swim teacher specialist accreditations, such as this course, are renewed every three years. Please also refer to specific industry standards and guidelines.
