Competitions

A pathway to compete. Lifesaving competitions span from local and state events through to national and international championships, offering opportunities for all levels to challenge themselves and progress.

NSW State Pool Lifesaving Championships

The NSW State Pool Lifesaving Championships is the premier annual event for pool lifesaving in the state, bringing together athletes of all ages and abilities to compete in a dynamic, skill-based competition environment. Held each year in partnership with Surf Life Saving NSW, the Championships highlight the strong connection between pool and coastal lifesaving, providing a shared platform for development, competition and pathway progression across both disciplines.

The event showcases a range of events designed to test core lifesaving competencies, including rescue techniques, speed, endurance and teamwork, all within a controlled pool setting. It provides an opportunity for participants to challenge themselves, represent their clubs and measure their performance against the best in the state.

Beyond competition, the Championships play an important role in building community, strengthening club culture and promoting the ongoing development of lifesaving skills that are directly transferable to real-world environments. It is a key fixture on the aquatic calendar, celebrating the dedication, capability and professionalism of lifesavers across New South Wales.

Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships

The APLSC brings athletes, teams, volunteers and staff together from across Australia for three days of competition both in the water (speed events) and out of water (initiative tests and CPR). While many compete for Championship titles, the APLSC also provide a unique opportunity for our Royal Life Saving members to come together in celebrating their extensive contributions to the lifesaving movement and friendships made along the way.

Individuals and teams vie for prestigious Championship trophies from Under 14 to Masters divisions, with each trophy named after a pivotal member of Royal Life Saving (UK and Australia) who helped support and teach others the importance of rescue skills that we still practice today

From first-time pool lifesavers to lifeguards, from 'clubbies' to the Australian Lifesaving Team, the APLSC draws lifesavers from across Australia.

To participate in the Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships, competitors must hold a Bronze Star (15 years and under), Bronze Medallion or equivalent lifesaving award (Surf Rescue Certificate, Surf Bronze) and be a current financial member of Royal Life Saving or Surf Life Saving Australia.

Commonwealth Pool Lifesaving Championships

The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Commonwealth Pool Lifesaving Championships is a premier international event that brings together elite lifesavers from across Commonwealth nations to compete in simulated water rescue events. The Championships showcase the highest level of skill, combining speed, precision and technical ability across a range of disciplines.

Competitors participate in events such as the 200m obstacle race, manikin carry, line throw and the super lifesaver, each designed to test critical rescue techniques, decision-making and physical performance. The event not only highlights excellence in lifesaving sport, but also reinforces the practical skills and capabilities required to respond effectively in real-world aquatic emergencies.

Lifesaving World Championships

Every two years, the International Life Saving Federation delivers the Lifesaving World Championships (LWC), recognised as the premier event on the international lifesaving calendar. The Championships bring together the world’s most talented and highly trained athletes to compete at the highest level, showcasing excellence in both lifesaving sport and rescue capability.

The LWC features a comprehensive program of pool and ocean events designed to test speed, strength, endurance and technical skill, alongside simulated rescue scenarios that reflect real-world emergency response. Athletes compete not only for individual and team honours, but for the prestigious title of the world’s best lifesavers, representing their nations with pride and professionalism.

Beyond competition, the Championships play a critical role in advancing the global standard of lifesaving practice. They provide a platform for knowledge exchange, innovation and collaboration across countries, reinforcing the link between sport performance and operational rescue capability in aquatic environments.

In 2024, Australia’s National Teams delivered an outstanding performance, making history by securing back-to-back titles as combined Open and Youth Lifesaving World Champions. This achievement highlights Australia’s ongoing leadership in the field and its commitment to developing world-class lifesavers equipped with the skills to perform both in competition and in real-world rescue situations.
