Introduction

Nosebleeds are a common occurrence that can affect people of all ages. They often appear dramatic due to the amount of blood, but most are not associated with serious harm. Everyday activities, changes in environment, or minor knocks can all trigger bleeding from the nose. Recognising nosebleeds as a frequent and usually manageable condition can help reduce anxiety when they occur.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Bleeding from one or both nostrils

  • Dizziness or faintness

  • Nausea from swallowing blood

  • Heavy bleeding that does not stop

What you should do?

  • Follow DRSABCD

  • Sit casualty upright, lean forward slightly (not back)

  • Pinch soft part of nostrils continuously for 10 minutes

  • Apply cold pack to bridge of nose to slow bleeding

  • If bleeding continues after 20 minutes, seek medical attention

  • If bleeding is heavy or casualty becomes faint/unresponsive, call 000 immediately
