When blood loss is significant, it can quickly become life-threatening if not managed properly. These incidents can happen in a variety of settings, from the workplace to the home or during outdoor activities. Understanding the seriousness of severe bleeding highlights the importance of being prepared to respond promptly.
Signs and Symptoms
Large or uncontrolled bleeding
Blood spurting or pooling
Pale, cool, or clammy skin
Rapid weak pulse, dizziness, collapse
What you should do?
Follow DRSABCD
Call 000 immediately
Apply firm, direct pressure with a clean pad or cloth
If limb: apply bandage to secure pressure, elevate if possible
If bleeding continues, apply second dressing or use a tourniquet (if trained and available)
Monitor casualty for signs of shock
