PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Description
The Water Smart Program is a fun and interactive water safety education program designed to give primary school students the knowledge and skills to make safer choices in, on and around water.
Aligned with the PDHPE curriculum, each session is tailored to the age and developmental stage of students, helping them identify and minimise water safety hazards at home and across a range of aquatic environments. Students explore practical safety messages, emergency response and safe behaviours through interactive activities, challenges and demonstrations.
Water Smart offers age-appropriate learning across each primary school stage:
Early Stage 1 – Staying Safe with an Adult: Introduces young students to essential water safety messages, with a focus on always being with an adult when in or around water.
Stage 1 – Water Safety Around the Home: Helps students recognise common water hazards in and around the home and understand how to make safer choices.
Stage 2 – Water Safety at Inland Waterways: Explores the potential hazards associated with inland waterways and teaches students how to stay safer when visiting lakes, dams, rivers and similar environments.
Stage 3 – Safe Behaviours Around Water: Builds students' understanding of safe behaviours in, on and around different aquatic environments including pools, inland waterways and beaches, including hazard awareness, lifejacket use, basic rescues and what to do in an emergency.
