Inland Waterway Safety Assessment
Inland waterways account for more than a quarter of all drowning deaths. Their calm, flat appearance can conceal changing depths, submerged hazards, currents and other risks, giving visitors a false sense of security.
The Inland Waterway Safety Assessment reviews the systems and controls used to manage these risks. It evaluates operational policies and procedures, emergency management arrangements, water safety signage, identified hazards, and access and egress points.
Landowners and managers receive a comprehensive improvement plan outlining practical risk-mitigation actions. This supports a proactive approach to reducing foreseeable risks and improving safety for residents and visitors using the aquatic environment.
Supervision Risk Assessment
Effective supervision is essential to managing risk and preventing incidents in aquatic facilities. Lifeguards play a critical role in identifying hazards, monitoring patron behaviour and responding quickly when assistance is required.
The Supervision Assessment reviews how lifeguards are positioned, deployed and supported across the facility. It considers the facility’s unique layout, activities, patron groups and operating conditions to determine whether supervision is planned and targeted effectively.
The assessment provides practical recommendations to strengthen supervision systems and maintain an appropriate standard of safety, informed by risk management principles and the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operation.
Mystery Guest Assessment
The Mystery Guest Assessment provides an independent evaluation of the customer experience, safety practices and service standards at an aquatic facility.
A trained assessor attends the facility anonymously and observes the experience from a guest’s perspective—from arrival and admission through to facility presentation, staff interactions, supervision and overall service delivery.
The assessment identifies strengths, service gaps and opportunities for improvement. Operators receive practical insights to help strengthen staff performance, improve the guest experience and maintain a safe, welcoming and consistently high-quality facility.
Aquatic Facility Safety Assessment
The Aquatic Facility Safety Assessment (AFSA) provides a comprehensive review of safety, compliance and risk management across an aquatic facility.
The assessment evaluates facility operations against the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations, relevant legislation, regulations and recognised industry standards. It helps owners and operators understand whether their facility is being managed in line with current requirements and reasonable safety expectations.
Following the assessment, operators receive a detailed report and prioritised safety improvement plan. Each identified non-compliance includes its risk level, the relevant guideline or legislative reference, and practical recommendations to address the issue and strengthen safety performance.
Signage Assessment
Clear, consistent signage helps patrons understand hazards, follow facility rules and make safer decisions around the water.
The Water Safety Signage Assessment reviews an aquatic facility’s existing signage against relevant standards, good practice and risk management principles. It considers whether signs are appropriately positioned, easy to understand and provide consistent safety messages across the facility.
Following the assessment, operators receive practical recommendations to address gaps, improve consistency and strengthen communication with patrons. This supports a safer aquatic environment and helps facilities demonstrate a considered, risk-based approach to water safety signage.
Facility Design Assessment
The Royal Life Saving Facility Design Assessment is a service developed to ensure the safety and inclusivity of aquatic facilities through expert evaluation of both design plans and completed builds. By leveraging industry standards and guidelines, the assessment provides critical insights into potential safety risks and accessibility challenges, helping facility operators create environments that are secure and welcoming to all users.
The service focuses on identifying flaws in both the design and construction phases, promoting best practices to address safety and compliance issues early. This comprehensive approach not only enhances the safety of aquatic environments but also ensures facilities meet the highest standards of accessibility and user experience from planning to completion.
