SWIMMING AND LIFESAVING
Lifesaving Awards
Develop practical survival, rescue and emergency-response skills through a progressive pathway leading to the internationally recognised Bronze Medallion.

Lifesaving Awards
Program Background
Royal Life Saving’s Lifesaving Awards provide a progressive pathway from water-safety awareness and personal survival through to rescue skills and emergency care. Delivered in schools, aquatic facilities and suitable waterways, the awards help participants develop the knowledge, confidence and practical capability to respond safely around water.
The Lifesaving Awards aim to develop confident and capable community lifesavers who can recognise aquatic risks, protect themselves and respond appropriately when someone needs help. Through practical learning and assessment, participants build the judgement, rescue skills and emergency-care knowledge needed to manage aquatic emergencies safely.

GET INVOLVED
Become a Facilitator and deliver the awards
Register with Royal Life Saving NSW and gain access to an extensive range of resources to deliver our programs
Our Lifesaving programs are delivered by Facilitators who are volunteer professionals eager to provide customer focused programs that foster training and skills that can save lives and prevent accidents.
As a Facilitator, you will gain access to the Facilitator Hub. This Hub contains the information and resources required to deliver a range of Royal Life Saving NSW Water Safety and Resuscitation Programs. You are required to keep your qualifications up to date, to maintain a current Facilitator status and receive RLS Lifesaving Awards.
Royal Life Saving Facilitators are able to deliver 5 Royal Life Saving Awards to students that are all mapped to the Australian Curriculum and NSW Syllabus.
These include:
-
Resuscitation Awareness
-
Bronze Star
-
Bronze Medllion
-
Bronze Cross
-
Junior Instructor
-
An approved Royal Life Saving NSW Facilitator must be 18 y.o. and must have at least one of the following qualifications:
-
Qualified School Teacher

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
-
Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher Qualification or equivalent
In addition, a Royal Life Saving NSW Facilitator must:

Aquatic Qualification i.e. Perform water rescue, Bronze Medallion (Bronze Facilitator's Only)
Please note that even with a current First Aid qualification, RLSNSW will still require a current Resuscitation Award, or CPR unit of Competency.
Facilitators must meet the required criteria for each respective Facilitator type and must successfully complete an application, as well as pay a fee in order to become approved.
As well as meeting the criteria above, a Bronze Facilitator will need to have the required knowledge to deliver a Bronze course, encompassing knowledge of Resuscitation skills that are compliant with the standards of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC).

Build thier skills
Progress from essential resuscitation awareness through to advanced rescue, survival and instructional skills and achieve the Bronze Medallion and support others to develop lifesaving skills.

Resuscitation Awareness
Resuscitation Awareness introduces participants to the basic steps used to recognise and respond to an emergency. Suitable for primary and lower-secondary school students, the program provides practical experience in resuscitation and emergency care. No previous experience is required.
Participants learn how to:
Check for danger and take appropriate action
Assess a casualty’s level of consciousness
Open and clear the airway
Check for normal breathing
Place a casualty in the correct position for CPR
Demonstrate rescue breaths and chest compressions
Respond if a casualty vomits
Place a casualty in the recovery position
Provide emergency care for a person experiencing shock
Resuscitation Awareness develops introductory knowledge and practical awareness. It does not replace an accredited CPR qualification.

Bronze Star
Bronze Star extends participants’ water-safety, personal survival and rescue skills while preparing them for more advanced lifesaving awards. Suitable for secondary school students, adults and developing lifesavers, the award builds the knowledge, judgement and practical capability required to respond safely to aquatic emergencies.
Participants learn how to:
Recognise aquatic hazards and assess an emergency
Apply personal survival and self-rescue skills
Perform survival strokes and swimming techniques
Complete reaching, throwing and swimming rescues
Select the safest rescue method for the situation
Demonstrate resuscitation and emergency-care skills
Communicate with and support a casualty
Work safely as part of a rescue response
Prepare for progression to the Bronze Medallion
Bronze Star focuses on extending the skills and knowledge required for safe water rescue and survival within the Royal Life Saving Award Pathway.

Bronze Medallion
The Bronze Medallion develops the survival, rescue and decision-making skills required to respond safely and effectively during an aquatic emergency. Participants strengthen their personal survival ability while developing the judgement, technique and physical capability needed to perform water rescues.
