Royal Life Saving NSW has recognised the incredible bravery of eight-year-old Aylah Redshaw from Argenton Public School, who helped save her five-year-old friend from drowning in a dam.

On Wednesday 14 October, a representative from Royal Life Saving NSW visited Argenton Public School in the Hunter region to personally congratulate Aylah and present her with a special gift pack in recognition of her quick thinking, courage and lifesaving actions.

Aylah Redshaw

Aylah's remarkable story made headlines after she rescued her five-year-old friend, Mason, who had fallen from a rope swing into a dam while wearing heavy motorcycle clothing.

When Mason began struggling in the water, Aylah immediately went to his aid. Drawing on skills she had learned during swimming lessons, she managed to turn Mason onto his back before floating on her own back and kicking her legs to bring him safely to shore.

Aylah credited her swimming lessons with helping her know what to do in the emergency.

Her actions are a powerful reminder of the importance of teaching children swimming, water safety and survival skills from a young age.

At Royal Life Saving NSW, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn essential swimming and water safety skills. Aylah's story demonstrates how these skills can make a lifesaving difference when an emergency occurs.

While Royal Life Saving encourages children to seek adult assistance and avoid entering the water to attempt a rescue, Aylah's ability to recall and apply her swimming skills in such a frightening situation is truly remarkable.

We congratulate Aylah on her bravery and thank Argenton Public School for welcoming Royal Life Saving NSW to celebrate this inspiring young member of their school community.

Well done, Aylah! You are a true water safety champion.
