Drowning in Adults (25–64 Years)
Adults are frequently exposed to aquatic environments and often underestimate risk or overestimate their skills.

Understanding the Context
Adults represent the largest demographic participating in boating, fishing, paddling, swimming and recreational water use. Many adults overestimate their swimming ability or underestimate environmental risks, especially in rivers, beaches and coastal environments. Alcohol, fatigue, medical conditions and distraction contribute significantly to drowning incidents, particularly in males and people participating alone.
Research and Statistics

In one recent reporting year, 151 adults aged 25–64 years drowned in Australia.

Adults aged 25–64 typically account for around half of all drowning deaths annually.

Around 80% of drowning deaths among adults are male.
